When This Tree Blossoms

Watch the video to see the cherry tree coming into blossom in Christ Church Gardens as it happened this Spring (2019).

In Spring 2020 when this tree blossoms the Future Machine will appear in Christ Church Gardens alongside some other artistic interventions in the gardens, to celebrate the coming of Spring and bring people together to think about the future and environmental change.

We last met under the trees on Friday 5th April, 2019 at 7pm and talked about the future of the project and the gardens, marked the date, ate blossom cake and samosas. As the sun went down Frank took a photo and made a film (coming soon).

‘When this tree blossoms…’ involves a series of videos made in the garden as the tree blossoms, which will be sent out on social media to invite people to the gardens through imaginative or ritual processes. We hope to be able to make this a regular annual event whilst developing another event for the Autumn when the leaves fall from the trees.

Following on from the creation of the event ‘When this tree blossoms….’ in 2018 as part of the Performing the Future project artists Frank Abbott and Rachel Jacobs will continue to work in Christ Church Gardens in Nottingham to follow the blossom of the cherry trees in the gardens and meeting under the trees when they are in full blossom to talk about the future. This year Frank and Rachel will be exploring different ways to record the changes in the gardens as winter turns to spring and the blossom appears on the trees.

This involves thinking about series of strategies which relate us to the specificities of the space and the community that we are part of which surrounds it, to develop over the next two years a series of rituals or moments which enable a process of thinking about the future. Narratives would be pursued which aimed towards the bringing together of people in terms which avoided the conventions of inner city urban space- issues of access, surveillance, care and control. Rather, we aim to create an image and curiosity driven approach to this little parcel of land within the city.

The Future Machine will appear alongside these interactions, as a witness.

It looks like the blossom has started! Today Frank is doing his first video. It looks like this year is going to be fast, no beast from the east this time! It has been quite mild and another warm spell is expected. This time last year there wasn’t a flower in sight.

I think we should meet this week… it’s gone so fast at this speed the flowers will start to fall away quickly too!

  3. It’s been so rapid. My cherry tree in my garden developed and then lost its blossom in the space of about a week, most disappointing as I would have liked to enjoy it longer.

We are now meeting on Friday 5th April under the cherry trees in Christ Church Gardens at 7pm to talk about the future of the project and celebrate the trees blossoming. There will be tea and coffee but bring warm clothes as the temperatures are expected to drop later this week!
