Future Machine went to The Lakes School and The Footprint – National Trust’s beautiful educational space in Windermere, out of season in June 2025.
At The Lakes School, Miss Fitzherbert’s year 9 students went on ‘A Journey To The Future’, beginning with the past, in the classroom, where they illustrated ancient maps of the Windermere-Leven waters with 4 things that was different in the past from now. Then we went to the playground to experience the present, with a 10 seconds of silence and using our bodies to sense the weather, air, light and sound. Then, we walked to the school rugby pitch next to Trout Beck, where Future Machine had appeared in the corner of the field. They met Future Machine, hearing messages from the past and listening to the music of the weather in the present. The pupils composed messages for the future, thinking about what will have changed in 30 years time. They spoke to the future, before returning to the classroom and lunchtime.
At The Footprint in St Catherine’s Woods, Windermere, Future Machine appeared alongside the launch of The Great Big Green Week. It was a wonderful gathering of people in Cumbria working towards Net Zero in many creative and dedicated ways. People met Future Machine and spoke to the future, whilst Future Machine played the music of the weather as it moved from sunshine to torrential rain, and wind to stillness.
