At the autumn equinox 2026, on Wednesday 23rd September, Future Machine appeared at Windermere Library.
First we met Year 5 and 6 who walked over to the library from Goodley Dale School. They met Future Machine, listened to messages from the past and the music of the weather. Then they went into the library to prepare for the future, making a beautiful banner celebrating the autumn and all the things they wanted to protect for the future.
At 1.30pm we opened the doors to the library for a drop in with tea and cake. Future Machine appeared again outside and a mixture of passerbys and visitors, tourists and locals met Future Machine and spoke to the future.
We then walked with Future Machine down to to Lake Windermere at Millerground (Rayrigg Meadow) to watch the sunset and celebrate the Autumn Equinox, meeting and gathering people along the way. Standing by and on the jetties to enjoy the beautiful late afternoon turning to evening, the sun beginning to set on the water. Some of us used the environment agency QR code campaign to register our observations of the water in the lake (we thought it appeared healthy).
We met over 50 people over the day, not including the school children.
On Friday 25th September Future Machine visited The Lakes School for the 4th year. Meeting Emily Fitzherbert’s Year 7 biology class, who met us in the wildlife garden. The pupils explored the garden making note of the small things they could see and the sky, weather and horizon. They heard messages from the past and danced to the music of the weather, then they left their own very thoughtful messages for the future.
